On Friday 21st December, Natalie will be leaving Grassroots Recruitment to begin new projects and further her experience in the working world.
In this blog, Natalie reflects on her highlights and experiences over the past seven months with us…
I will be leaving the team on Friday the 21st of December. Although I’m sad knowing I won’t be returning after Christmas, I am looking forward to what the future holds! My time at Grassroots has been an enjoyable and valuable experience that has helped prepare me for my future not only professionally, but personally as it’s allowed me to progress and grow as an individual.
Where it all started
When I was first offered the Marketing Executive Internship at Grassroots in May 2018, I was quite nervous due to my lack of experience in a professional environment. However, that did not stop me as I like a challenge and I knew I would regret turning down the opportunity. After I left University in July 2016, I had a short-term job working in Arts and Crafts and then in January 2018, I started a 3-month internship at the University of Salford doing Marketing and Social Media Management which I enjoyed. After seeing a similar role from Grassroots, I knew I wanted to develop my skills and knowledge in Marketing. My time here has enabled me to develop essential skills and training along the way. Working closely with Caroline, I gained the specific knowledge and experience needed to succeed on the internship. I was over the moon when I was offered an extended contract as the Marketing and PR Executive, after completing my 10-week internship.
Marketing Strategy and Key Projects
First and foremost, my main goal from the start has focused on improving the candidate and employer experience by increasing brand awareness, driving job applications, improving communications, and promoting the recruitment services through social media.
Over the past seven months I have; assisted in project planning, implemented a new Digital Marketing Strategy, been responsible for content planning and copy writing for online and offline communications; social media scheduling and campaigns; direct mail, customer segmentation and market research, website optimisation and SEO, the implementation of competitions for clients and candidates and created new graphic designs.
Although I’ve enjoyed my whole experience with Grassroots, here are a few of my key highlights that have stood out along the way…
The Kitchen Takeover at The Wellspring – The Grassroots team volunteered in the kitchen at our chosen Charity of the Year, The Wellspring. The centre in Stockport is open 365 days of year and provides food, drink, clothing, medical care and lots of advice for homeless and disadvantaged people. When we arrived, we were shown around the kitchen and basement area and was assigned to different individual roles in order to complete daily tasks.
The day began by preparing sandwiches of all flavours, a hot roast dinner and an Eton mess for dessert and began serving food to the visitors. The corporate volunteering was a rewarding and valuable experience for me as we I got an insight and understanding of how our donations and time make a difference to those in need.
Networking Events – From the beginning, I attended a couple of networking events with Caroline, such as the monthly Marketing Stockport meetings and the careers day at Aquinas College. I believe that learning to socialise with local business people in a professional manner has helped improve my confidence and ability to communicate successfully.
Stockport Business Awards – Although unfortunately I was unable to attend the Business Awards due to a holiday, I was really thrilled and proud of the team for winning the Business of the year award in their category! After months of hard work, from guest speaking at regular events, producing info-graphics and videos, to delivering career counselling and workshops at local colleges and honest, ethical recruitment, it really did pay off. It meant so much to the whole team and it’s a great testament to their continued hard work.
I want to say a massive thank you to Grassroots Recruitment – I will miss working here. I’ve had some great training and support during my time which I’m very grateful for and I wish you all the best in 2019 and beyond.
Caroline said: “It has been an absolute pleasure having Natalie with us. She is a true professional and has demonstrated a very mature, loyal and sensible approach to dealing with whatever has been thrown at her. Her ideas and project outcomes have really helped drive forward our marketing strategy for 2018. Natalie’s creative talent coupled with her ability to manage a complex workload with a self-managed and intelligent approach will stand her in good stead as she progresses in her chosen career path. I will miss working alongside her but on behalf of the whole Grassroots team, we wish her every success.”
